Gently Understanding Okinawan Dialect

Gently Understanding Okinawan Dialect

須方三城

People from Okinawa frequently make statements that, taken literally, mean "I will take your life," but they don't actually intend to kill anyone. "Shinasu" (死なす) has a nuance more like "I'll beat you up," and "Shineyo yaa" (死ねよやー) means something like "Get your act together." "Takkuru sarindo" (たっくるさりんど) is reported in the media as "I'll kill you," but in most cases it means "I won't actually kill you, but I'll beat you so badly you'll be begging me to put you out of your misery." So even if someone says "Takkuru su!" (たっくるす!) and comes at you swinging, they won't actually kill you. They'll just punch you with the intent to hurt. ※Note※ First and foremost, this work is a "comedy piece." The dialect explanations in this work are not based on thorough research, but rather dialect knowledge the author has naturally picked up from living normally in Okinawa—in other words, they have a strong regional slang flavor. Please enjoy this with the understanding that it's half-joking and about ninety percent humor.
