The End of the Heian Dynasty. The capital was experiencing both material and spiritual decline, and the legal codes that had once maintained the dynasty had become mere empty shells. In such times, a certain freed man who enjoyed idleness at a street corner facing Nijo Avenue was quietly troubled by thoughts of his own future. Lost in his own world, he suddenly noticed a one-eyed serpent crawling across his foot. Startled, he kicked the snake toward an abandoned house across from him. Then he heard a woman's scream coming from the empty house. From this incident, he devised an absurd means to ease his anxiety and, attempting to carry it out, breaks into the abandoned house. There, he discovers a woman hiding inside her kimono.
